Reading This Book Will Make You Better —Jim Campbell
Being old enough to have seen “Room 222” on TV as a young boy, this book caught my attention because I’d remembered a character in the show named Pete Dixon who then seemed like he must’ve been the best teacher and nicest guy in the world all in one.
Turns out, the actor who played Pete Dixon, Lloyd Haynes, probably really was the greatest guy ever.
This book is a lot more than a story about a TV program though.
Written not long ago by his wife Carolyn Haynes, after she found a trove of Lloyd’s keepsakes and personal writings following his passing, “The Lloyd Haynes Story” lays out much of his life for us and the values he lived by.
If you want to truly learn, understand and feel what it’s like to face and overcome adversity of the worst kinds (extreme poverty, KKK levels of racism and much more), somehow still come out of such strife with the most incredible personality, attitude, a deep sense of gratitude and a heart filled with love for others, it’s all in here.
It’s authored in such a way that it’s biographical and educational along with history lessons that unfold for us at the same time. You feel like you’re there living through it all with Lloyd.
Do read this book. You will grow from the experience and it will make you better… I know it did that for me.

BENEFITS OF READING Steven Spielberg—“Only a generation of readers will span a generation of writers. Reading broadens the thinking-horizon of a person, improves vocabulary and cultivates a sensitivity towards people of different cultures. Reading encourages the muscles of the brain into a healthy condition, expands the imagination, and the concentration which results in the ability to look at the problem objectively and therefore gain the ability to make better decisions. Reading biographies of individuals help the reader to learn the art of living and avoiding sometimes costly pitfalls.” 😀 ❤
Talented author Carolyn Haynes in Bewitched: Secrets from Comedy Genius Sol Saks takes a deep dive into the essence of Sol Saks and his lifelong journey in the entertainment industry. Haynes opens the door not only to Saks’ genius at writing comedy but to his very heart and soul as a man.
In addition to sharing in depth information and insights about many TV shows and actors that Saks wrote for – shows and actors I watched and loved – most notably BEWITCHED – Haynes lets the reader visit the very heart of Saks as a person and writer. Here are only a few of the many comments Saks shared with Haynes about writing and being a writer that I thoroughly enjoyed: “I wasn’t funny as a kid or as a grown-up. But I knew I wanted to be a writer at about age 13. … Some years later, a new writer asked me how he could get an agent. My response was to become a success first. … Except when driven, keeping up concentration for eight hours a day is a difficult task. … Make a schedule you can stick to as closely as possible and make that time sacred. … When the words don’t come – don’t press, don’t quit, don’t panic. Don’t blame yourself for stupidity; frustration and agony lie in that. Be kind to yourself – be patient and keep going.”
The book is not only about his work, though. Haynes describes the man, his thoughts, his dreams, his disappointments, his health challenges.
An unexpected, pleasant surprise in the book is learning a great deal about the author Haynes herself (a snapshot of a potential memoir to come later perhaps): “First as a secretary, bookkeeper, and property manager [for Saks], then assisting [Saks] with writing plays, books, university classes, and occasionally, my favorite moments, working with other actors. Eventually, Sol would ask me to oversee a script on stage and check the timing. But always, my chief job was to listen as he poured out those nagging thoughts, aggravations, and missed opportunities.” And that Haynes did exceptionally well, taking meticulous notes, which she shares in this detailed book.
Haynes’ account of her last lunch with Saks, who was nearing his 100th birthday, is heartwarming, a tearjerker. I highly recommend the book.

Alice Ida Antoinette Guy-Blaché 07/01/1873-03/24/1968
Working in France at the dawn of cinema, Alice Guy-Blaché was one of the first filmmakers…period. From 1896 to 1906, she was probably the only female filmmaker in the world. She experimented with Gaumont’s Chronophone sync-sound system, color-tinting, interracial casting, special effects, & one of the first to make a narrative fiction film.
She eventually moved to America with her husband, founded a movie studio and proceeded to direct hundreds of films over the next couple decades. Most of her work has been lost over time but what remains isn’t just novelty. Guy-Blaché was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the cinematic medium!
“May these words explain all that is in my heart and bring to you, if not joy then light to your present darkness. Remember, tears may come at night, but there is always joy in the morning and always the promise of a new day, if we will but believe in it.
Think of me sometimes as you venture out from this safe little village. Putting on all the love and all the heart-breaks of the past as gentle armor and stepping out with faith into a troubled world that needs you. Guard your heart dear Abe.
“Surely, in the light of history, it is more intelligent to hope rather than to fear, to try rather than not to try. For one thing we know beyond all doubt: Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, ‘It can’t be done.’” — Eleanor Roosevelt 😃♥️
Before Lloyd Haynes enjoyed success as an actor, he rapidly gained success as a folk singer in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area. Eventually receiving requests to appear in venues throughout Europe and Asia.
Lloyd said, “It was my good fortune to open for performers like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Richard Pryor.”
Haynes was grateful for the opportunity and enjoyed every minute of work.
Nancy Wilson was an American singer whose career spanned over five decades, from the mid-1950s until her retirement in the early 2010s. She was especially notable for her single “(You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am” and her version of the standard “Guess Who I Saw Today“. Wilson recorded more than 70 albums and won three Grammy Awards for her work. During her performing career, Wilson was labeled a singer of blues, jazz, R&B, pop, and soul; a “consummate actress”; and “the complete entertainer”.

I read your book twice. There are so many new and interesting insights that, for me, twice was required. I was caught up in the spell of your perception and your experiences with Lloyd. Your book is a gift to all who read, to those who knew and loved him, and to the millions who have been told they can’t succeed. I wholeheartedly recommended your well-written, inspirational book. 5⭐️ —Blanche Grant
